From 1 July 2026, the NDIS will require all providers delivering SIL supports to be registered. Providers must complete (or at least apply for) registration by 1 October 2026. The goal of this change is to improve quality, safety, and consistency of services.
What this means for participants
Starting 1 July 2026:
- If your current SIL provider is already registered — or has submitted an application before 1 October 2026 — your supports can continue without disruption.
- If your provider is not registered by 1 October 2026, they will no longer be permitted to deliver SIL supports under the NDIS. In that case, you will need to transition to a registered SIL provider.
What you can do now
If you’re unsure about your provider’s registration status, you can:
- Speak directly with your provider, or
- Check their registration using their ABN via the NDIS provider lookup tool.
What happens next
Many providers are currently working through the registration process, so it’s normal if your provider isn’t registered just yet.
However, if your provider chooses not to register, it’s a good idea to begin planning early for a potential change. Starting early can help make the transition smoother and minimise disruption.
Your provider should support you — along with your family or authorised representatives — to ensure continuity of care. You can also reach out to your Local Area Coordinator (LAC) or the NDIS for assistance.
What this means for service providers
Key information
All providers delivering SIL supports must either:
- Be registered, or
- Have applied for registration by 1 October 2026.
A new registration group will also be introduced:
- 0138 – Assistance with Supported Independent Living
This support category will be formally added to the NDIS (Provider Registration and Practice Standards) Rules 2018.
Further details are available on the NDIS website.
What providers need to do
- If you are already registered: No action is required at this stage.
- If you do not intend to register: You should start working with participants to transition them to registered SIL providers ahead of the October 2026 deadline, so they do not lose access to supports.
